Printable Perspective Grid Paper

Beginner5 min readUpdated

A printed perspective grid lets you draw on paper with the same accuracy as a digital guide. Export the grid as a vector PDF, print it at 100%, and lay drawing or tracing paper on top over a light box or bright window.

In short

  • Export as PDF for sharp lines at any size — Letter, A4 or the current canvas shape.
  • Print at 100% scale — turn off "fit to page" if you need exact sizes.
  • Keep the grid sheet clean and reuse it under fresh paper.
  • Light grey or blue lines are easiest to work over.
From export to drawing: the grid sheet stays clean and reusable.

Steps

  1. Set up the grid. Choose 1-, 2-, 3- or 5-point mode and place the horizon and vanishing points. Pick the Portrait aspect if you will print on Letter or A4.
  2. Pick a light line style. A thin line and a light colour (grey or blue) at moderate opacity.
  3. Export PDF. Use Export PDF and choose Letter, A4 or Current Canvas Aspect. The PDF is vector, so lines stay crisp at any print size.
  4. Print at 100%. In the print dialog, use actual size if you need the grid to match a specific sheet.
  5. Draw on top. Place tracing or marker paper over the grid on a light box, or draw directly on the printout.

Which grid to print

  • Practice sheets: one-point with a centred VP and two-point with wide VPs.
  • Interiors: a one-point room grid with the horizon about two-thirds of the way up.
  • Comics and fisheye panels: a five-point grid.
  • Classroom: print several variations so students can compare horizon heights.

Paper tips

Marker paper and tracing paper show the grid clearly. For heavier paper, use a light box or tape both sheets to a sunny window. Printing the grid in a light colour keeps it from overpowering your lines if you draw directly on it.
